Today we will:

1a. Journal time:  title it:  Research Journal....    Have you come across any issues in finding information? How have you dealt with those issues? How do you plan on selecting and organizing your research? What specific sources are relevant to topic? What sources do I need to make my project successful? (interviews, books, web databases, magazines, encyclopedias, reference books, multi-media presentations, workshops, articles, newspapers, museums, libraries, and other site visits)  

 

1b.  I will be checking your research log on Wed, so make sure you are keeping up with it.  It is worth 20 points for this project, so be mindful and keep it up.   (This log is worth points under your daily grades (rhetoric).

 

What is your Research Log looking like? What kinds of information should be in your research log?

What should You write in you Research Log entries?

  • Source/ Citation
  • Database
  • search terms
  • location and time
  • Why its important and how you plan on using it
  • Notes,quotes and conversations. 

The final Research Log should be computer generated and uploaded to your wiki page.

 

Example :  FCD Research Log   and Research Log 4C   <-- Some ways I have done a research log over the years, and you can see how it have evolved, through trial and error. 

The step before I even start to create a log is a quick search of just cool sources I might use, don't read them but use the first pass and save to create a log later.

2. Steps for rereading and annotating sources  Please consider the following:

 

Step 1. Review each source.   Who is the author of this text? What if anything, do I know about him or her? Any details or credentials provided?  What can I figure out from the title? What can I determine about this piece based on where it was published or appeared?

 

Step 2.  Mark up each source. This means writing notes on the pience you are reading Annotating is different from highlighting. Highlighting allows you to remind yourself of what you found interesting or important, but  doesn't allow you to record why you found things interesing or important.  Annotating is more active; it gives you the change to record  your critical thoughts as you read more closely. It also keeps you engaged with the text, as it allows you to "tallk back" to it.

 

Step 3. Identify author's purpose and main points. What is the author's purpose? How cleaer is it? Can you put it inyour own words?  (If you can summarize what you've read in your own words then you probably understand it. By the same token, if your can't summarize it in your own words, chances are you don't fully grasp what you've read and you reread m ore carefully. 

 

Step 4. Analyze each authors use of sources, evidence & rhetorical appeals.  Notice wherether the piece presents statistics, anecdotes, personal experiences, or other types of evidence to support its poinbts. Also note whether this piece is using ethos, pathos, or logos.  As you notice these things, keep in moind that if you are positively affected by the use of evidence and rhetorical appeals in the peice  you  might want to try the same techniques in your own writing. 

 

 

3. You should have Half of your annotated bibs done.  Please make sure they are posted to your wiki page and that the file is called HALF of ANN Bib.  This file should be in your Research 102 folder.  

This will make it easy for me to evaluate the assignment.

 

4. You must complete a peer review of the annotations.  So with your groups that you were placed in, complete the following

  • Go to your partner's page and download their uploaded HALF of ANN Bib file.
  • Complete the peer review  (Use the Research 102 TAMUK )   As your guide to review the contents of the annotations.
  • Once you have finished.  Click Save As and add your initials to the end of the file name, and upload it to your page.  Please  make sure you place it in your Research 102 folder. 
  • Then notify your peer that you have completed the Review of their annotations.

 

5.  Now you should have your second Source Review draft.  Please review the directions within  Research 102 TAMUK.   (Example Source Review)

You will need to have a draft of this assignment ready for class on Wed.  

1. Why do you have to write source reviews?

Purpose:

In order for you locate your argument, you must first spend time organizing, assessing, and unpacking your sources. Once you can see clearly what kinds of voices and perspectives address your research questions, you can enter into the conversation by addressing counter-arguments as well as articulating and supporting your own arguments.

 

2. The assignment ask you to:

 

In a two page, double spaced, typed document, you will review an article or media source which provides a credible, informed perspective on the issue and the research question that you have chosen.

  1. A key objective is to find credible sources that provide different or varied perspectives on your issue. What are the experts saying?? Do they all see the issue from the same perspective/ lens??
  2. Identify what type of source you are citing. Is the publication in which your article appears a periodical? a scholarly journal? a daily newspaper? It's important that you understand the difference in order to correctly cite your source and to be able to evaluate important rhetorical elements of the piece.
  3. Determine the credibility of your source. Questions to consider: how long has the publication been in print? What's its ciruclation? Who is its intended audience? Who is the publisher?
  4. At the top of your page, cite this source using a documentation style of your choice (ex. MLA or APA).
  5. Summarize the author's argument and supporting points, in your own words.
  6. Quote from the author. Identify what you think will be the most relevant direct quotation that you may want to use in your paper.
  7. Analyze the author's rhetoric (art of persuasive communication) and recommend the source or not, describing its merits or lack of, and its agenda.
    1. What facts and perspectives is the author representing, and which ones are being left out, why?
    2. What are the political, social, economic, etc. biases? Does the original journal, magazine, book that this article was published in lean towards any political, social, or economic bias? Who are the publication's intended audience?
    3. How well are you persuaded by the author's strategies? Why or why not?

6. Come prepared to start working on your APA assignment in class on Wed and complete a Peer Review of your Draft of your Source Review one.

We will use the Grant Davie article to start to set up this project.  

 

7. We will review the databases & Evaluative topics in class.

 

 

HW:  Work on anything and everything that needs attention for Research 102. FIND a Orbit of a famous person and bring it hard copy to class on Monday.  Complete the readings listed for today.  We will be discussing those and writing about them in class on Monday.  We are on the downhill side of this project, so the remaining parts of it will be done outside of class.
