Portfolio INFORMATION

The word portfolio comes from the Latin word meaning “to carry a sheet of leaf of paper” Artist, photographers, designers, and inventers carry portfolios with examples of their work to show the range and level of their talents. The English 1302 portfolio is designed to encourage your growth and to demonstrate your achievement as a writer. We will use the portfolio to collect the writing, research, and thinking you do this semester.

There are three sections to your Portfolio. Count them three sections and all of them are vastly important to my evaluation of your efforts. The first thing that should be present in your portfolio is your reflective letter.

Reflective Letter:
What is a reflective letter? Well, what does it mean to reflect? Now with that in mind think back to the whole thinking, writing and researching process of this paper. What are the things that stand out most in your mind as evidence of your hard work?Write about those things...refer back to your weekly  reflectives and demonstrate through the written workd how you learned and why you chose to add this item into your portfolio as "your best work." I want to hear about your learning process while working on this portfolio. You will need to address the focus for this portfolio and how your word demonstrates falling in line with this focus and what you learned from these assignments. You are explicating to your instructor what you have been doing the past several weeks and why this is a demonstration of your hard work and best work. This is a polished piece of writing, so it should be free of most errors. It should be revised and not left to the last minute. This leads us into the next portion of your portfolio.
The reflective letter should be written on Word and then copied and pasted into wiki with hyper-links to all the information you wish for me to consider. You would write the link exactly how you did the originally and will automatically acknowledge it and post it there for you. This means that your evidence and your reflective letter is all in this one piece of writing. This simplifies things for you and for me and you. Everyone is happy! I will go over the details in class and also in lab. You will know how to link your evidence in this letter. there will be a couple of classes devoted to the creation of your reflective letter.

Evidence:

So what is evidence? Whatever you think evidence is, as long as you can tie it in with the assignment and class theme? Your learning experience is unique therfore your evidence will be unique, so really every person will answer that question differently; we all look and respond to information in a different manner. We process things differently so why would this section be the same as your peers? Does everyone think alike? YOU and I stress YOU must show evidence of critical thinking whatever that may be for YOU. That is something I can’t tell you. It does not mean lack of direction but rather letting you feel around and find out things for yourself. YOU will be making this knowledge truly your own. You don’t have to just include things we have done in English class but rather from other classes or just your life itself as long as you can justify that piece of writing and how it fits into the theme we are working with you can include it into your portfolio. Remember that this portion of the portfolio is a reflection of the past weeks your work. The contents of this portion will depend on what you put into your studies.

The Paper:

All the class discussions and readings are tools to aid you in writing this piece therefore that is why it is worth 60% of your portfolio grade. I will assign a grade on the writing in the portfolio so you will know how you did on that particular writing assignment but the final grade will be a portfolio grade with a combination of the reflective letter, evidence and the paper.

How you portfolio is evaluated?  (This section does not apply to my DMC students see Syllabus for details).
