Today we will:

1. Journal over reading. (Helping Students use textual Sources Persuasively)

Please create a page and title it Kantz and place the page in your Project 2 (Research 102) folder.

Please write for 10 min on this reading prompt. Let this be a full ten min of writing, keep the thoughts free flowing.

(If you need to, please copy and paste the prompt into your wiki so you can quickly look at the prompt if needed, to continue writing.

  • One of the goals of all these readings is to help you consider constructs or conceptions of writing that don't hold up under close scrutiny. How would you name the constructs that Kantz is calling into question? Why would it be useful for you as a writer in college or in a professional setting to understand her findings and claims? Do you think Kantz's ideas will change your own approach to doing research and writing with sources? If so, how?

2. Class Discussion questions (This is not a journal, but questions we will use for class discussion)

  • How does Kantz know what she knows? What is the basis for her claims?
  • What is Kantz's research question or problem?  What does she want to know , or what is she trying to solve.
  • What challenges do the students about whom Kantz writes face in making sense of conflicting sources?

3. Three Annotated Bibs are due. Time to exchange and lets do a peer review.

The Annotated Bibliography:

Performing college-level research is often a challenging task. Keeping your research organized and easily accessible can be even more difficult. To help you stay organized and to ensure your understanding of the sources you’re reading, as well as the multiple perspectives on your issue, you will create an annotated bibliography in which you annotate a range of sources (minimum of eight) for your subsequent argumentative research essay.

Summarize: in 3-5 sentences, discuss the main arguments (thesis/claim), the main point(s) of the book/article/source, and the topics covered.

Synthesize: in 3-5 sentences, compare and contrast the source’s main argument with those of your other sources. On what points do your authors agree or disagree, and why?

Your annotations should be 10-15 sentences each. You can go over this if it’s necessary, but try not to go over 20 sentences—anything more than that and you’re not summarizing anymore.

Note: In-text citations are different for the annotated bibliography. Since the annotation is written right under the reference, you do not need to cite every single sentence. However, if you do use a quotation from the source, you should include the page number in a parenthetical citation.

 4. Decide on your final topic. Please sign the topic sheet, and get approval on your topic.  Approving the topic now does not mean your proposal will be accepted. It just means you have a good working topic that COULD be worked into a grand evaluative topic.

Please read over the proposal. As you will start on the proposal this weekend for homework, the final approval for the topic will come from the proposal.

Setting up for next week:

5. Source Reviews   <-- You will need to find a source...Make it one of the favs you want to use for your paper.

HW: Work on your ann bibs. You must have seven total by class on Monday and a working draft of your source review.

2. Important: Read over your Mid-term portfolio requirements.  You are officially able to start working on this, so take advantage of this opportunity. F18 MT Portfolio Description
