Today we will:
1. We have started the discussion of a thesis statement for evaluative Essays, and now it's time to put things into action. Hopefully you starting working on it solo, but we are going to start working on it officially today. So to transition from the research you have been doing we are going to answer the following questions which were
outline in your text.
Formulating Claim Answer the following questions. This will help align your evaluation and set up your paper.
What exactly is my opinion? Where do I stand?
Can I make my judgement more clear-cut?
DO I need to narrow or qualify my claim?
By what standards will I make my judgement?
Will readers accept my criteria, or will I have to defend them, too? What criteria might others offer?
What evidence or major reasons can I offer in support of my evaluations?
2. Remember your thesis should be a complete statement.
Make a claim of evaluation and state the reasons that support it (be specific).
3. I will be coming around and looking at your thesis statement and offering suggestions and help. Many of you were already thinking about your thesis statements weeks ago. Now all that pre-writing is going to come in handy.
4. How do you plan on organizing your information?
Why is it key to be examining this now?
5. Please look at the time line for this project. You will see there is NOT time to wait till the last min to get things together, so get to things right away.
6. Your Homework assignment was to read theEvaluative Essay by Jack Chung, The Burden of Laughter: Chris Rock Fights Ignorance.
Please pick out the evaluative claims, evidence of the claims, counter claims and the counter to the counter-argument.

Extra Credit Option for Project 3: Find an obit of a famous person, (not an article about them, the actual obituary), and find all the Evaluative statements within it and how they back up those claims.
