Research 101 PART ONE: Annotated Bibliography

For detailed instructions on how to compile an Annotated bib, visit the Owl Writing Lab

 Requirements

  • Your annotated bib document and entries must follow either MLA conventions.
  • You must include a minimum of 10 entries. If you wind up finding/needing more sources, I encourage you to list them in your annotated bib.  (five to seven sentences min for the annotations, more is okay.)
  • A minimum of 5 of your sources must be either from books in the MC Library or accessed through ILL or peer reviewed, scholarly journal articles.
  • All other sources must be rigorously analyzed for credibility. If you locate newspaper or magazine articles via the MC Library databases, you can be relatively assured that your source is credible. If you conduct "google based" searches for web sites, you must PROVE that the website is credible and necessary within your annotation. I strongly encourage you to limit your sources to only those you access via the MC Library databases or card catalog.
  • The annotations for this bib should be brief, in five to seven sentences, please describe the following:
    • The main points of the article or chapter.
    • Identify whose perspective is being represented in the article or chapter. (Is the author "for" or "against" the issue? Is the author primarily focusing on one way of examining the issue...for example, does the author represent a psychologist's take on the issue vs. someone from the law enforcement community?
    • How did you locate the source? If you did not use the MC Library to locate this source, you must write an additional sentence explaining how you determined that the web site or source is credible.
    • How you plan on using this source in your paper?
  • You must represent multiple perspectives in your annotated bibliography.

Research 101 PART TWO: Research Proposal

You are invited to submit a Proposal to present your research. The first step in presentation, is writing a Proposal for a panel of judges (boss etc..), and they will be looking for a well written proposal that demonstrates interdisciplinary writing.

  1. It should be min 200-250 words. (double spaced).
  2. It needs to inform the audience of your research (what is your proposed issue?) Your narrowed topic.
  3. Perspectives. There should be several perspectives presented.
  4. Explain why you chose this issue?
  5. Express your opinion on the issue
  6. Why is this issue of importance for the audience to be interested in? What are the key/points, ideas and claims to be presented?
  7. A brief synopsis of what you foresee as the outcome of this issue based upon your research.
  8. It needs to share the sources you are using to support your opinion on the issue and the multiple perspectives?
  9. Research can hit some bumps in the road...so project some difficulties (or the difficulties you have already hit) you might see cropping up while conducting this research.

Although you are not writing an essay, proposals are a formal piece of writing, and they should be clear, concise and to the point. DO NOT WASTE time with puffy language and be vague in your writing. It is all about clear, concise writing that demonstrates your effectiveness in research within multiple disciplines.
