Discovering your thesis statement

What is a thesis statement?

A thesis statement is a strong statement that you, the writer, can prove with evidence. It generally consists of two parts: your topic and then the analysis, explanation or assertion.

It is a very specific statement –it should cover only what you want to discuss in your paper. It must be supported with evidence.

  • Your statement needs to be a product of your own, proof of your critical thinking after you have done research.
  • Another way to look at it is the angle or point of view from which you present your material.

When do you write it?

  • You write your thesis after you have written a solid focused research question. A solid research questions leads to a solid thesis and sound evidence.
  • And after you have done research into your topic of choice.
  • You will then present your thesis statement in your introduction, prove it with evidence in the body of your paper, presentation or project.
  • Finally restate it along with a summary of your evidence in your conclusion.

How do you write it?

  • Look at your statement of purpose
  • Review the kinds of information you have been finding wile taking notes.
  • Decide what kind of statement you have enough evidence to prove. (You want to be sure you have done enough research to support your argument. Be prepared for challenges to your argument.)
  • Write that as your thesis statement.

Why is it important?

It unifies your essay and helps the audience to understand what you say and to remember it. When writing a paper the thesis helps your audience to focus attention on a narrower field of information and to think more deeply about it. The result is that instead of superficially touching on many points, you can develop the material in a way that is more beneficial to your audience.

The thesis statement has endless possibilities; it is all depends on what you find out in your research and what your opinion is.
