Effective Conclusions

What do you need to do?

In the concluding portion of your paper, say something that is designed to move the audience to take action on what they have heard.

Why is it important?

What is said in the conclusion is often remembered the longest. It influences the effectiveness of the entire paper.

How to do it?

  1. Be sure that your conclusion is directly related to the thoughts you have already presented.
  2. Show the audience what to do about what they have read.
  3. Motivate your readers by what you say and how you say it in the written word.

This part of your paper is one of the most important. You may have carefully researched and organized the material for the body of your paper. You may also have prepared an interest arousing introduction, but remember there is still one more thing needed...an effective conclusion.

Keep in mind:

What you write in your conclusion should be directly related to the theme/thesis of your paper. It should follow as a logical conclusion to the main points you have developed. Usually, your purpose in writing is to encourage others to take action on the basis of the information you present. One of the main purposes of the conclusion is to show them what to do. In addition to showing you audience what to do, your conclusion should provide motivation. If the conclusion is carefully thought out and well written, it will reinforce the impact of your entire paper.

Note that your paper is coming to a close. What you say should indicate that. Your conclusion should have a note of finality.

How long should the conclusion be?

AHH! That is something to be determined by the writer. The conclusion should not drag on, and it should not be too short that the audience wonderes if they missed the conclusion. So the writer needs to determine the proper length based upon the audience the paper is intended for.
